open access publishing

i had the pleasure of attending a meeting about crafting the UW libraries’ position on open access publishing today. it blew my mind. the UW libraries are supporting open access publishing! why? for financial reasons (price of subscriptions to serials growing astronomically) but anyway, it is great that they are helping to encourage people to pry publishing out of the hands of for-profit organizations and help make information available to anyone who is interested in it. helps restore some of my faith in academic libraries that was chipped away in the many years i worked for them.
