seattle taverns

2007 October 30

i don’t usually read the seattle weekly, but the ‘endangered tavern tour’ this week caught my eye. as a die-hard beer lover who only has coctails when forced to by extreme peer pressure, taverns and pubs are close to my heart.

then i got more excited when the first location they covered was in machias, wa. this is some crazy shit. i had never heard of machias, wa until i visited machias, me two weeks ago.

here are the ‘bad little falls’ for which machias, me was named. i’m told it is a Passamaquoddy word. so how did there get to be two ‘machias’s on opposite sides of the country?

anyway, while at the hanaford supermarket right there in machias i purchased a six-pack of pbr for will. the woman who was ringing me up asked to see my id. i showed her my wa state drivers license and she told me that she used to live in seattle. she told me that when she and her husband decided to move to maine they chose machias because it is located in washington county in maine- because of the fact that there is a machias in snohomish county, washington. crazy. if you clicked the link, you saw that machias, me has less than 3,000 people and is way the f down in downeast maine. she said she was happy with her choice.

next step: i would like to visit the tavern in machias, wa. just for kicks.
